This project follows the work of Save Our Seabirds on the West Coast of Florida. The sanctuary was established by Dale Shields, a.k.a., “The Pelican Man” in 1981. They are the only organisation of their kind in South West Florida and now respond to over 4,000 callouts each year. Their services also offer education to the public and local schools, hosting over 25,000 paid visitors in their Wild Bird Learning Centre each year.
Birds that are unable to be released back into the wild are given a permanent home on site. The most common injuries are caused by fish hooks, cars and golf balls.
